But if you start from How did the actors manage to secure the audience’s attention? as a problem, you already have problems, surely? People paid attention because they were interested, and though the reasons for that interest may have changed (they had fewer alternatives in Racine's day!) I think you have to credit the audience with some goodwill...
I understand the urge for authenticity didn't extend to playing the original (i.e. untranslated) text?
