Our cats go outside, but when I got them the lady from Cats Protection suggested that I should keep them in at night, if possible, as that's when most accidents happen.

I have been closing the cat flap when it gets dark and opening it in the mornings.  Although it's not cat-proof as a stategy (they tend to go out immediately before it gets dark and stay out as long as they like, sometimes overnight) it does seem to work more or less well in that most mornings I do get up to find all of them inside.

It's also noticeable that when we come back from a holiday there is often evidence of fighting - a ripped ear or a nasty bite.  So, given that I can't really ask kindly cat feeders to turn up twice a day to open and shut the cat flap, I have a choice of leaving the cat flap open while we are away, or shut.  To date I have been leaving it open.

So (rather late in the day, one feels) the other day I asked the internet whether anyone sold cats flaps with timers attached.  I would have thought that there was massive demand from cat owners.  Apparently not.  There are two on the market, and as one of them requires a collar to attach the magnetic key, I have ordered the other one.

Crossing my fingers that it will work.
