So on Friday night Phil and Kari kindly invited me over to dinner as Michael was away in India.  And they fed me lovely Szechuan food and we drank moderate amounts of wine.  And on the way home I managed to cycle face first into a parked car and ended up in Addenbrooke's.

I spent the rest of the night hanging around in a cubicle waiting to see a doctor, waiting for X-rays, waiting for medication.   The worst thing was being drenched in blood (from my nose) and finding it really hard to swallow (which you don't normally think about, but if your sinuses are completely blocked, its really hard!)  Fortunately Phil had lent me a book about death and skiing, which I read from cover to cover(!)

I may have broken my nose (and possibly cheekbone) though the X-rays aren’t definitive.  I have to go to a clinic on Wednesday once the swelling has gone down. Anyway, I look ghastly, but part from the face there’s nothing broken.

So I'm sore and fed up, and feeling like an idiot, but it could have been worse.  It looks as though the bike's a write off, though, as the front forks are bent back and the frame is bent.

Every cyclist's nightmare! Or, at least, one of a series. I hope your injuries heal swiftly and without complication.

oh hell! Are you okay? Is M back yet, and if not would some company be beneficial?

broken noses are bitches: have done this at least twice (once without even a drop of alcohol!) and it takes ages for the psychological flinch to fade.

I'm fine, thanks - at least as fine as I can be. Thank you for the offer of compaany, but M will be back this evening and I need to get on with the cooking. Some company later in the week would be lovely.

Glad M's back tonight, and that you're doing okay. Let me know what days would be best for Visiting The Sick: early evenings easiest ...

Tuesday or Wednesday would probably be best.

Oh no! Sounds awful: I hope the maybe-breaks turn out not to be breaks at all, and your face resumes its former proportions and so forth.

Sorry about the bike.

And, um, a book about death and skiing...?

By Graham Joyce.
Our theory is that you should come down and be her cook for the week, btw.

Still not quite the book I would have chosen in the circumstances. Nevertheless I felt deeply grateful for it.

This week I will be mostly eating things that do not require Chewing. It would be lovely to have you visit one week when I can actually eat real food. Also I am expecting an infestation of builders, and visitors and builders really don't mix.

I hereby underwrite the statement about the wine. She had three glasses, tops, and was in no way under the influence when she left.

you poor, poor thing!

Do hope you're not in TOO much pain. And don't hesitate to ring if you need anything (via our mobiles - our landline's packed up at the moment).

At least with Mike in India (thinking back to arse over tit episode in London), your friends and colleagues can't make the tiresome and obvious jokes...

But seriously, if you need anything, just ring.

Ouch - just catching up on LJ, and so sorry to hear about this.

I hope you're feeling much better now, and that Mike has been terribly sympathetic.

Have just seen your post. Am really sorry to hear this . Would you like company or shopping done ?

That's very kind but M is back from India so shopping is no problem. If you would like to drop round it would be lovely to see you, but I'm not wilting from lack of company. Indeed, I have Builders!
