Went to an Aikido class for the first time in nearly ten years on Wednesday. I was looking for an extra fitness class to do on Wednesdays now that evening rowing has packed up for the winter, and it was either Aikido or circuit training.
I had thought that I was reasonably fit until I practised a few breakfalls, and found myself out of breath. You know, I can run for about half an hour, but 10 minutes of Aikido had me puffing and sweating. And now (as Suzanne Vega didn't say) I'm aching.
You know, Aikido uses all those leg muscles that you don't really need in real life. (Heavy sarcasm.) The sitting down and the standing up muscles. The going downstairs muscles. You would have laughed if you could have seen me this morning hobbling downstairs one step at a time. Going upstairs isn't quite so painful, but then you have to get down again.
So, I'm rowing tomorrow morning, and I just can't help thinking that it's going to be the same darn muscles again. At least it shouldn't be raining.
